For my birthday a couple of weeks ago, I took the boys to the zoo with some friends for a fun picnic lunch! We were experiencing some uniquely gorgeous weather for May, so it turned out to be the perfect day!
We LOVE that the zoo let's us bring in our own food. With the boys, I like bringing "convenience foods" that are still relatively healthy! For this picnic lunch, we did our own (much healthier) version of "lunchables" with some of our favorite convenience items--like string cheese and grape tomatoes! I like to make sure the boys have a fairly well-rounded mix--fruit/veggies, carbs, dairy, etc. And, thankfully, I found some good deals at Safeway, especially on their Lucerne dairy products (did you know that June is National Dairy Month?! You're sure to find some good deals this month on your favorite products)!!
So, here's what we had for our picnic: multigrain crackers, ham, cheese (two kinds), tomatoes, carrots, milk, and our special dessert.
Since it was my birthday, I wanted to bring a little extra special treat and was planning on doing little individual short-cakes with strawberries. But, I didn't have time to make my own and could only find angel food cake. It worked out great though!
I cut a section of the angel food cake, tore it up into bite-size pieces, and placed the pieces in a plastic container.
Then, I cut up strawberries and placed them right over the angel food cake. And, instead of putting the whipped cream on before leaving, we just took the can with us! It worked out so well--a super tasty treat! Big Brother was so excited for our picnic at the zoo and the food was a hit! He was loving his special "milk box".
Thanks to our great lunch, we had lots of energy for checking out all the fun animals!
If you'd like to see a little more of our zoo picnic experience, then here's a video for your viewing pleasure! :)
What are YOUR favorite picnic foods? Where's YOUR favorite picnic spot?
Disclosure: This project has been compensated as part of the June Dairy program for Safeway. All opinions and experiences are my own.
Great picnic lunch for your birthday Sara, and what a fun place to have it-the Phoenix zoo is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThe angel food cake idea is brilliant. I'm doing that at the next picnic we go on.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun trip to the zoo! Loved how you created the strawberry shortcake. Genius!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picnic foods are similar to your zoo picnic...I love little nibbles like cheese, crackers and crudite! I love the idea of a healthy lunchable...thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeletewhen I am at home, I like making a strawberry sauce with a bit of sugar, strawberries, and oj. simmered down and drizzled on that angel food cake. then the whipped goes on top. ;)
