Christmas at my house

I hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas and weekend with your families.  We have visits with out of town friends and family coming in town this week, so still have some Christmas festivities yet to come.  There's so much I want to post, but not sure what I'll have time for...
In the meantime, you can check out the post I wrote for The Frugal Find (especially good if you have leftover Christmas ham) and I'll leave you with a glimpse of Christmas at our house taken from my family blog...
The decorations were up all over the house...

Two creatures were stirring, but certainly not a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney on the banister with care...

and it's evident that "Santa" had certainly been here.
We opened stockings (and presents) to find all kinds of toys,
and new slippers,
and shirts...
for my favorite boys.
As always, thanks for reading Mom Endeavors!

Merry Christmas!

Wishing you and your family all the joy and magic that this season brings!
Thank you so very much for reading Mom Endeavors and have a very, Merry Christmas!

Homemade Ornaments

In case you missed it earlier this week, here is my ABC & 123 Learning guest post on homemade ornaments:

Happy Christmas week!
In our house we have an ornament tradition, part of which includes homemade ones.  Even though they may not be the most ornate or prettiest, many are favorites for the memories they hold.
For our oldest son's first Christmas a few years ago, we made a handprint ornament to remember those precious little baby hands--one for us and one for both sets of grandparents.
We continued that tradition this year for little brother's first Christmas...
To make ornaments like this, you'll need:
- clear glass ornament balls (you can pick them up at your local craft store for a few bucks), acrylic paint, a paint pen that writes on glass, and any decorative stuff you want to put on the inside (paint, fake snowflakes, tinsel, glitter, etc. There's a great tutorial here on putting glitter inside.)
This year, I opted to paint the inside by just squirting some paint inside adding just a bit a water & swirling around.
Once that's had a bit to dry, then paint your little one's hand and apply to the ornament. If it doesn't look right, you can just wipe it off while it's still wet! (Getting a baby's handprint on there is definitely the hardest part of making this!)
You can also make cute whole family ornaments in a similar fashion--instead of handprints, we used everyone's thumb prints to make our snowmen family:
Paint each person's thumb with the white paint and (starting at the bottom of the ornament) apply to form snowmen. Let the thumbprints dry (about an hour) and then you can paint them to your liking.  Just dip toothpicks into the colors of your choice and paint!
Then use your paint pen to write the year, names, a Christmas message or anything else you'd like!

If you don't want to mess with acrylic paints or glass ornaments, here are a few other kid-friendly ideas:
Let them paint wooden ornaments!  You can pick them up at the craft store on sale for less than 50 cents a piece.
Set your little one up with some washable tempera paints and let them go.  Here's "big brother" making his star ornament presents last year (2.5 years old):
His first hand-painted ornament!
Other good homemade ornament ideas with kiddos involve pictures!  Use paper, foam sheets, popsicle sticks, or anything similar to make a decorative photo ornament.  Even very little ones can get involved by finger painting or dumping glitter on glue that you put on.
This is little brother's first ever "homemade" ornament:
And, last but certainly not least are some of my favorite kid-craft ornaments...
candy cane reindeer!

They bring back fond memories of making them with my grandparents as a kid!  And, they are so easy to make too!  You need some candy canes, pipecleaners, pom-poms, eyes, any other embellishments you'd like (bows, bells, etc.), and hot glue.
If your kids are too young to make these all by themselves (like mine), then get out all the supplies and let your kiddos make choices about the reindeers' look--like what size/color nose, what kind of antlers, bows/bells, etc.  We made "Rudolph & Clarice".  Fun!
Hope you and your kiddos have a great time making some homemade ornaments!!   Thanks to ABC and 123 for inviting me!

Got Cranberries?

Two recipes we'll be enjoying on Christmas day feature cranberries as a main ingredient:

Cranberry-orange muffins with streusel topping & cranberry pineapple salad!
Double yum!
Cranberry-orange muffins
These are a new one for this Christmas, as I had fresh cranberries I needed to use and an orange tree in the backyard full of ripe fruit.  I found the recipe here and made a few adjustments. I think they might become an every year thing too--Oh so tasty!!
Ingredients:
- 2 C flour
- 3/4 C sugar + one extra tablespoon
- 1 t baking powder
- 1/2 t baking soda
- 1/2 t salt
- 1 1/4 C fresh cranberries (slightly chopped)
- 1 egg
- 3/4 C orange juice
- 1/4 C vegetable oil
- 2 t grated orange rind

Directions:
- in a large bowl, combine dry ingredients
- chop cranberries just a bit, add to dry ingredients
- in a small bowl, beat egg, add orange juice, oil, & orange rind
- add to dry ingredients
- pour into greased muffin cups
For streusel topping:
- mix together 2 T flour, 1/4 C sugar and cut in 1 T butter until mixture resemble course crumbs.  Sprinkle on top of each muffin.  Add some turbanado or decorating sugar sprinkles.
Bake at 400 for 15-20 minutes.

Cranberry pineapple salad

The cranberry salad was the first dish I brought to Thanksgiving as a married lady and we've had it nearly very Thanksgiving and Christmas since then.
Ingredients:
 - 1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
 - 1 8oz. box raspberry jello
 - 1 20oz. can crushed pineapple
 - 1 apple (I usually use granny smith)
 - chopped pecans (optional)

To make:
 - drain juice from crushed pineapple into a large glass measuring cup (set aside the  pineapple in a medium bowl).  Add water to get 3 cups.  Boil liquids.
 - Pour hot liquids into serving dish. Dissolve gelatin in hot liquid. Add can of whole berry sauce--break up in the jello.  Put in fridge to start setting
 - chop apple & pecans.  Mix with pineapple.
 - once the jello mixture has cooled and is just starting to set, stir in the fruit & nut mixture.  Return to the fridge to set completely.
Note:  I almost always make this the day/night before to let set completely & let the flavors combine.
The picture shows a double recipe made in my trifle bowl.

ENJOY!

Christmas Muffin Tin Meal

We kicked off Christmas week this morning with a special muffin tin breakfast!
There was cheesy Christmas stars (cheese cut out with a star cookie cutter), snow (shredded coconut & a few "snow balls"-cream cheese with coconut), yogurt with snowflake sprinkles, an apple Christmas tree with sprinkle ornaments, and the feature of this breakfast was of course, Rudolph the Red-Nose Waffle Reindeer!
To make Rudolph, I used about 1 and 1/2 waffles.  The cuttings from the face were used for ears and I cut his antlers from the second waffle.  Eyes are cream cheese dots with chocolate chips and his nose is the end cut off of a Mike & Ike candy. Syrup for dipping was in the muffin cup underneath.
For the tree, I just cut a thick slice off an apple and carved the tree shape (the apple wasn't big enough to use my tree cookie cutter).  Then, just put on some fun Christmas sprinkles.
Rudolph has been of great interest to Big Brother this year, so his muffin tin was a HUGE hit! :)

I so love making these special meals for him!  This one only took about 5 extra minutes and was so worth that extra time!
As always, for lots more fun food inspiration for your kiddos, check out Muffin Tin Mom!

Holiday Baking Extravaganza

There are SO many great holiday treat ideas!
In preparing to do some Christmas baking this week, I stumbled upon a couple cute things...then a couple more...then a few more...and then, I suddenly had a list of like 25 things and HAD.TO.STOP!  So, here's what I'll be baking (NO. Not all of them! But, hopefully at least one from each category!)

{Snow-Inspired Creations}
The snowflake pretzels have been a big hit and we'll need more for this weekend!
The kiddos would love making Flexible Dreams'  adorable little marshmallow snowman treats!
These melting snowman cookies from Crazy Domestic are so appropriate for our winter in the desert!
Or, for a healthier snowman snack, how about this snowman cheese ball from Babble?!
And, wouldn't the kids love some cute polar bear "cubcakes" to share in all the snow festivities?  Get all the directions for these on Family Fun!

{Peppermint Paradise}
Check out these peppermint "candies" from Bake at 350 !
 Seriously, so cute!
How about giving out some real peppermint candies in a "not so choking hazard" kind of way?!  Michelle, the Muffin Tin Mom shows you how!
Tidy Mom serves up some deliciously easy Christmas tree peppermint bark!
Picky-palate shares the delicious combinations of brownies, candy canes, and kisses! Definitely nothing to be picky about there!
How about some homemade mint patties?!  Let Domestic Sugar show you how!
I've never made homemade marshmallows before. But with all the great recipes I've seen now, I totally want to try.  And, Little Birdie Secrets' peppermint version sure does sound good in some hot chocolate!

{Festive & Fun}
Can't decide on red or green for your Christmas cupcake?!  No problem, let Sugar Wings show you how to have them both in one!
I.LOVE.THIS! Rice Krispie Treat ornaments from The Finer Things in Life.
Nothing says festive & fun like some of Bakerella's Cake Pops! Can't wait to make these!
One of Betty Crocker's Top 10 Red Hot Holiday trends--the kids would love getting in the kitchen to make these bags of Reindeer Feed!
Maybe you need to make some reindeer to accompany that feed.  These Reindeer Cupcakes from Hoosier Homemade are some of the cutest around! And, speaking of Hoosier Homemade and cupcakes...these ornament cupcakes are beautiful!!
..."not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse!"
So many Christmas stories feature mice, so how perfect would serving up these chocolatey cuties from Taste of Home be while reading your favorite mouse story?!

{Bars...a.k.a Heaven in a Pan}
These chocolate revel bars have been so nice to have in the freezer this holiday season.  And, since the first batch is oh so close to gone, it's time for round two! Or, maybe just one of these next few recipes instead:
Oatmeal chocolate caramel bars from Mel's Kitchen Cafe
Cranberry Cinnamon Chip Bars from Our Best Bites
Double Chocolate Magic Bars from Life as Mom

And last, but certainly not least in the Holiday Baking Extravaganza....
{Christmas Cookies}
Not only do these little raspberry stars from Tidy Mom look adorable, but I'm sure they taste absolutely delicious!
I've never made crinkle cookies before, but they look so easy & yummy. Make the Best of What's Around will show you how!
I love almost all things lemon, so these Slice 'n Bake Lemon Gems from Taste of Home look amazing!

And, finally, the grand daddy of them all....Christmas cookies with royal icing!  I've never made royal icing...never even used it...not even the already made up, store-bought kind. For some reason, it seems somewhat elusive and scary--like for the "big time" bakers or something.  But, no more!  This year, I am trying it!  For those royal icing scaredycats  newbies like me, The Crafty Penguin shares a whole tutorial!
And, Bake at 350 even shares recipes & tips in free printable form!
Once you know how to do royal icing, look at these little beauties you can create:
Personalized ornament cookies from Bake at 350
Beautiful snowflakes like Tidy Mom.
Maybe even the jolly 'ole big man himself, from, who else?!

Thanks to all of you creative geniuses for such wonderful ideas!  Many a friend and family member who come by my house will be thanking you for it!
